West Indies to name Lara’s successor on Sunday

KINGSTON, April 25: West Indies will announce a new captain, to replace the retired Brian Lara, when their board meet on Sunday.

The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) said the squad for next month's tour of England would be finalised once the new skipper had been appointed.

Lara retired from international cricket on Saturday and his vice-captain, 26-year-old Guyanese batsmen Ramnaresh Sarwan, has been widely tipped to take over.

Trinidad captain Daren Ganga, who did not feature in the World Cup squad, and opening batsmen Chris Gayle have also been suggested as possible successors.

WICB chief executive, Bruce Aanensen, said the selectors had already put forward their nomination to the board.

Lara's side had a disappointing World Cup in the Caribbean, winning just one of their six games in the Super Eights stage of the competition.—Reuters
