GUJRANWALA, May 1: A row has broken out over observing death anniversary of Amir Cheema between his family and the Tanzim Ahle Sunnat faction led by Pir Afzal Qadri.
Amir Cheema, who was arrested by the German police on the charge of threatening the editor of a newspaper for publishing derogatory caricature of the Holy Prophet, died in the custody last year and was buried in Saroki Cheema, Wazirabad.
It is learnt that differences between Amir’s family and the Tanzim developed over the collection of donations for building a mausoleum on his grave and its control.
Another dispute developed on the observance of his death anniversary. The family announced May 13 as his death anniversary when he was buried while the Tanzim planned it for Tuesday (May 1). It had announced an elaborate programme for the anniversary. However, strong opposition of Amir’s father, Nazir Cheema, forced the group to reduce its programme to a conference only. Moreover, Amir’s family refused to attend the programme and requested the authorities to stop the Tanzim from observing the death anniversary.
A heavy police contingent was deployed around Amir’s grave to avoid any untoward incident.
Talking to this correspondent, Prof Nazir alleged that the Tanzim had been threatening him and his family with dire consequences for differing with it.
He said he would not allow anybody to use his son’s sacrifice for political and monetary gains.
He claimed that the Qadri group wanted to shift Amir’s body from Saroki to Gurjat to achieve monetary benefits.
It may be recalled that the Tanzim has been in the forefront when Amir’s body was brought from Germany. Later, it organised conferences and seminars to collect funds for building his tomb. Amir’s father used to attend these meetings.
