LAHORE, May 3: Opposition parties are making arrangements to give a ‘rousing’ reception to Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry here on Saturday where he is scheduled to address the Lahore High Court Bar Association.
The party leaders and workers will join the chief justice’s caravan from Rawalpindi and travel right up to Lahore. Since the CJP is scheduled to travel to Lahore by GT Road, political workers will receive him and the caravan at all places where Justice Chaudhry will be addressing.
The parties say that the provincial administration has picked up scores of their activists and raids are being conducted to arrest more of them.
Punjab PPP information secretary Farzana Raja fears a fresh crackdown on workers. She says that a majority of the 200 workers, who were nabbed ahead of May 2 rally in front of the Supreme Court, have not yet been released. She claims that another 100 workers have been taken into custody to prevent them from participating in the reception in Lahore.
According to her, some of the provincial office bearers will accompany the CJP’s caravan from Rawalpindi and workers all over the Punjab have been directed to give the chief justice a rousing reception en route the GT Road.
She says that PPP leaders and workers will receive the CJP at Shahdara. However, the party’s Punjab and Lahore leadership will gather at Nasser Bagh and march up to the Lahore High Court building to show solidarity with the CJP.
Punjab PML-N media coordinator Mudassar Malik says party leader Raja Ashfaq Sarwar will join the CJP from Rawalpindi and Punjab president Zulfiquar Khosa will join the caravan at Sarai Alamgir near Jhelum.
According to him, party workers have been directed to receive the CJP at all towns on the GT Road. He claims that about 100 workers have so far been arrested across the province.
The Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaaf says that its workers will receive the CJP at the shrine of Data Ganj Bakhsh and then accompany him to the LHC building.
According to Punjab information secretary Omar Sarfraz Cheema, city president Shabbir Sayal will head the party rally.
Punjab MMA president Liaquat Baloch says that leaders and workers of all the component parties will join the caravan at Rawalpindi and travel to Lahore. He also claimed arrests of workers and a continued crackdown for the arrest of more of them.
