PESHAWAR, May 20: The Customs Intelligence and Investigation unit of the Central Board of Revenue (CBR) has found in the premises of a closed factory in Hayatabad 48 containers packed with relief goods donated by foreign countries for the quake-affected people in five NWFP districts and different parts of Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

The goods in the containers include electronic items, read-to-eat food and generators worth millions of rupees donated by various countries for the affected people.

“We have recovered 12 special jeeps, 500 tents, six refrigerated containers, 44 split air-conditioners, 44 portable toilets, generators, cooking range, hundreds of heaters, washing machines, fans and furniture from the seized containers,” CBR Intelligence and Investigation director-general Qurban Ali Khan said at a news conference on Sunday.

Mr Khan said: “We have received reports that many edible items and electronic goods meant for the quake-hit people are being sold in different markets.”

He said that CBR officials had raided a closed factory in the Hayatabad industrial state and seized 37 containers from its premises. On a thorough search of the factory godowns, 10 more containers were found.

Preliminary investigations revealed that some foreign rescue teams, which had established camps in Muzafarabad and Shinkyari in early 2006, left the containers for quake survivors while returning to their countries. Mr Khan said that some elements had stolen the goods.
