LONDON, May 26: David Graveney, the chairman of cricket selectors since 1997, wants to stay part of England set-up even if his job as chief is abolished. Schofield report on performance of team from 2002-03 to last winter called for a new full-time post of national selector. The person appointed would travel with team and have equal voice on tour to captain and coach.

“I'd just like to stay involved in whatever capacity board consider,” Graveney said.

Schofield review group was set up in wake of England's 5-0 Ashes defeat in Australia. Team selection was criticised both before and during tour, with particular focus on then coach Duncan Fletcher's preference for spinner Ashley Giles and wicket-keeper Geraint Jones at start of series.

“Everybody takes joint responsibility,” said Graveney.

But he hit back at critics of Fletcher, who has since been replaced by Peter Moores.

“I've been a bit disappointed – particularly through media – with amount of criticism Duncan's received as he is and has been outstanding coach and did a fantastic job for England,” he commented.

Schofield report contained 19 recommendations, 17 of which have already been accepted by England and Wales Cricket Board.—Agencies
