KARACHI, Aug 30: It was yet another moment of joy for the fraternity of the game as Pakistan’s third seed Tanveer Ashiq overcame the second seeded Indian Chandril Sood in three sets to reach the boys’ singles final of ITF juniors ranking tennis tournament (second leg) on Thursday.
The Lahore-based Tanveer recovered from a shaky start to post a 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 victory over his opponent at the Karachi Club.
He now meets winner of the first leg, Nuttorn Tanchainant of Thailand, who humbled fifth seed Lakshit Sood in contrasting style 6-3, 6-0.
Earlier, local lad Nasir Mushtaq had surprised all and sundry by progressing to the first leg final before bowing out to the Thai player in a three-set duel on Sunday.
In the girls’ competition, the country’s lone hope and fourth seed Sarah Mahboob made a quiet exit when she went down to top seed Lankan Jithmie Jayawickrema 4-6, 1-6.
Jithmie, who skipped the previous leg, now faces third seed Soniya Dayal who in the other pre-final toppled second seed Inayat Khosla 6-7, 6-4, 6-2.
By virtue of the triumph, the Mumbai-born Soniya proved that her last win over Inayat in the first leg final was not a flash in a pan.
The pair of Soniya/Inayat also stormed in the girls’ doubles final by getting the better of Richa Valecha/Dipti Shrivastava 6-3, 6-3 to set a date with Sarah/Jithmie, who accounted for Susita Das/Anushka Kapoor 6-2, 6-2.
The Sood twins — Chandril and Lakshit — earned some consolation when they advanced into the boys’ doubles final to meet Nehal Kapoor/Gugan Varma.
