QUETTA, Sept 9: Lawyers in Balochistan would observe a strike on Monday in protest against what they called ongoing military operation, extra-constitutional detentions and the arrest of Sardar Akhtar Mengal and other political workers.

This was announced by Balochistan Bar Association president Baz Mohammad Kakar and vice-president Jamil Sabir while addressing a press conference here on Sunday.

They said that according to the National Lawyers Committee, the lawyers of the apex court and three high courts would observe token strike to express solidarity with the people of Balochistan.

Mr Kakar said lawyers would stop working after 11p.m. on Sept 10. He said they would also take out a procession.

He said the lawyers would soon start their second phase of movement against the government. The struggle would be continued till the resigning of President Gen Pervez Musharraf, he said, adding that, “we hope the civil society and people would come forward and extend their support for lawyers’ movement”.

Mr Kakar informed the newsmen that he and Pakistan Bar Council president Munir Malik managed to meet Sardar Akhtar Mengal in Karachi jail despite hurdles were created by jail authorities.
