PESHAWAR, Sept 11: Representatives of the civil society and members of the parties constituting the All Parties Democratic Movement (APDM) organised demonstrations across the North West Frontier Province on Tuesday in protest against the deportation of former prime minister Mian Nawaz Sharif to Saudi Arabia.
MANSEHRA: The APDM took out a procession from the secretariat of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) in protest against the government’s controversial step.
The protesters, carrying banners and placards, raised slogans against the government. They said Gen Musharraf had crossed all limits by violating the Supreme Court decision which held that no citizen could be barred from returning to his/her country.
The rally later turned into a public meeting which was addressed by several opposition leaders.
KOHAT: The APDM’s call for observing Tuesday as a ‘black day’ received a lukewarm response from the public, party workers and business associations alike.
The APDM leaders accompanied by a few dozen people took out a protest rally from the Kotwali Mosque. They chanted anti-government and anti-Musharraf slogans.
After passing through the main bazaar, they gathered at the Shah Faisal Gate where leaders of the APDM’s component parties delivered speeches.
PESHAWAR: The parties making up the APDM took out a procession from the Soekarno Chowk to Chowk Yadgaar. The processionists raised slogans against the government step of forcibly deporting Nawaz Sharif, claiming that it amounted to contempt of court.
Members of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal, Awami National Party, Pukhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party, Balochistan National Party and Tehrik-i-Insaaf took part in the protests.
LAKKI MARWAT: On the call of the Pakistan Bar Council, the legal community boycotted all court proceedings. The lawyers also protested against the killing of a senior lawyer in Karachi and the laying of siege around the Sindh High Court premises.
The district bar president strongly condemned the murder of Raja Riaz and the brutal assault on Mohammad Ali Abbasi advocate.
He also condemned MQM workers and leaders for disrupting the proceedings of the Sindh High Court.
TIMERGARA: Political parties and the district bar association held a protest demonstration against the forcible deportation of Nawaz Sharif and the arrest of political party workers and leaders.
The protesters assembled at Balambat and marched in the streets chanting anti-Musharraf and anti-government slogans.
The NWFP amir of the Jamaat-i-Islami, Sirajul Haq, president of the District Bar Association, Timergara, Abdul Hussain, district amir of JUI-F Maulana Zahid Khan, MPA Muzaffar Syed, MPA Saeed Gul and Noorul Wahab addressed a rally at the Rest-house Chowk.
UPPER DIR: Punjab police arrested the secretary-general of the youth wing of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, Inamullah Khan advocate, along with 29 party workers from Upper Dir on the occasion of Nawaz’s return to the country on Sept 10.
Talking over the phone from Islamabad, Samiullah, son of Inamullah, said the youth wing’s president, Raja Nadir Pervez, had been arrested.
He said they were to be produced before the judge on Tuesday but till the filing of this report they had not been produced in the court. At least 29 local workers of the party were also in police custody.
