GCU incident: governor pledges probe

LAHORE, Dec 8: Governor Khalid Maqbool says an inquiry will be conducted into alleged misbehaviour with mediamen by the Government College University staff at the varsity convocation and added that those responsible will be punished.

The governor, who is also varsity chancellor, was talking to journalists after the prize-awarding ceremony of the third International Kangroo Mathematics Contest (IKMC), 2007, held at GCU’s Bokhari auditorium on Saturday. Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Khalid Aftab was also present on the occasion.

It may be mentioned that at GCU’s sixth convocation on Saturday last, some GCU officials deputed at Bokhari auditorium had misbehaved with electronic and print media reporters while denying them entry to the auditorium to cover the event on the pretext that they came just after the beginning of the convocation ceremony.

It may also be mentioned that a daily English newspaper journalist was again denied entry to the auditorium to cover the ceremony on Saturday, on the pretext that he came late. It is, however, interesting to note that the prize-distribution ceremony started over 45 minutes late than the announced time.—Staff Reporter
