ISLAMABAD, Dec 12: PML(N) chief Mian Nawaz Sharif is planning to launch a movement immediately after the January 8 elections with two objectives: restoration of deposed judges and ouster of President Gen Pervez Musharraf.
The former premier has asked his party to prepare a one-point election manifesto: reinstatement of all judges of the superior courts sacked by the Musharraf regime. To achieve this objective, Mr Sharif is reported to have started consultations with leaders of like-minded parties.
He is also reported to have asked his close aides that he planned to soon launch a march towards Islamabad for the purpose.
Mr Sharif told newsmen in Lahore on Tuesday that the success of the democratic system hinged on an independent judiciary and, therefore, the restoration of the sacked judges was necessary.
Mr Sharif said that it was strange that PPP chairperson Benazir Bhutto, who was ready to boycott general elections, suddenly changed her stand on the independence of judiciary after allegedly receiving a message from the US. Mr Sharif said that APDM politicians had failed to understand that leaving the electoral field open to the PML(Q) would have meant allowing it to take majority in assemblies.
