HYDERABAD, Dec 23: Senior vice-chairman of PPP Makhdoom Amin Fahim has said there will be no move to impeach President Pervez Musharraf if elections are held in a free and fair manner. He, however, said that if elections were rigged, PPP would keep its options open.
He said that Benazir Bhutto would soon start her election campaign in Punjab.
He was talking to journalists at the residence of Abdul Razaque Memon, who had earlier announced his decision to retire in his favour on PS-44 in Matiari district. He was acoompanied by Makhdoom Rafikuz Zaman, Makhoom Jamiluzzaman and Haji Nisar Memon.
When asked if the PPP would work with President Musharraf if it gained majority, he said that it was a constitutional requirement that governments had to work with the set-up that was already there.
Stressing the need for suspending powers of nazims of district governments, he alleged that district police officers and district coordination officers were interfering in the election process all over the country. He said that complaints were being filed with the Election Commission.
Regarding seat adjustments with MMA candidates, he said it was part of the election process and Khalid Mehmood Soomro had earlier been supported in the Senate.
He said that Ms Bhutto had not attended the multi-party conference in London because the MMA was an ally of the PML-Q in government, adding that the PPP had demanded that the MMA should resign if it wanted the PPP to attend the conference.
He said that talks were being held with various parties on the issue of seat adjustment. He said that elected legislators, who had not yielded to financial, administrative and political pressures in 2002 were allowed to run from the same constituencies.
