KARACHI, Jan 7: Prof Dr Anis Khursheed will be remembered as the founder of modern librarianship in Pakistan, said teachers and educationists at a condolence reference held at the University of Karachi on Monday.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof Dr Pirzada Qasim Raza Siddiqui, presided over the reference.
They said Dr Anis was the first scholar in Pakistan to obtain a PhD in library science and was subsequently awarded the pride of performance award in recognition of his services. He remained chairman of the International Library Association, South Asia, in addition to playing an active role in the movement of progressive writers. He contributed more than 175 research articles in prestigious journals at home and abroad.
Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Akhlaque Ahmed, Prof Dr Farman Fatehpuri, Dr Sabir, Dr Naeem Qureshi, Malahat Kaleem Sherwani, Dr Jalal Haider, Dr Aqeel Ahmed, Dr Abid Husnain, Ahmed Samdani of the Pakistan Library Association, brother of the late Dr Anis Khursheed, Bashir Khurshid, and other family members attended the condolence meeting.
The Karachi University vice-chancellor said there were few teachers who could be remembered as a ‘role model’ by students and Prof Anis was certainly one of them. He underlined the need for publishing the research papers of the late scholar.
MBBS exams
The University of Karachi on Monday announced the schedule of the third professional MBBS annual examination 2008.
According to the programme, the paper of pathology (new course) and pathology II (old course) would be held on Jan 22, community medicine on Jan 25, ophthalmology (eye) on Jan 29 and ENT on Jan 31.
The candidates who earlier failed their pathology I (old course) exams have been asked to appear in the exams on Feb 2. The papers would be conducted at the department of social work from 2pm to 4.30pm, and from 2.30pm to 5pm on Friday.
BCom registration date
The University of Karachi on Monday extended the last date for the submission of registration forms of BCom and improvement of division for external examination 2007 till Jan 15, 2008.
Candidates can deposit a total fee of Rs2,000 (including Rs600 late fee) till the due date. The registration forms can be obtained from NBP/UBL counters located at the Silver Jubilee Gate on a payment of Rs25 each, a KU announcement said on Monday.
DUHS course
Meanwhile, the Dow University of Health Sciences on Monday announced the commencement of a computer course specially designed for teachers from Feb 1.
DUHS sources said that under the latest arrangement training in computer skills were being offered to teachers working at different educational institutions across the province.
The 45-day computer course was said to be specially designed to meet the needs of teachers. The course will be conducted on Saturday and on Sunday morning.
Interested candidates were advised to apply directly to the computer learning centre
of the Dow Medical College (Baba-i-Urdu Road Karachi) by Jan 20.
The sources pointed out that while computer technology had become essential in all disciplines of knowledge, it had not received due attention in the fields of medicine and education in Pakistan.
Professionals and trainees associated with the two fields would be enabled to acquire at least basic computer skills through the course.—Agencies
