KARACHI, Jan 10: The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) on Thursday announced that it will collect information about workers of political parties and citizens arrested or wanted on allegations about their involvement in the Dec 27-related violence.
In a statement issued on Thursday, HRCP’s secretary-general Iqbal Haider and vice-chairperson Zohra Yusuf expressed grave concern over the reports that the government was using post-Dec 27 incidents, as an excuse to enter people’s homes, arrested hundreds of thousands of political workers and created an environment of fear.
The HRCP would compile a report about the individuals sought by the Sindh government on allegations of arson, looting, dacoities and burning of private and public property following the assassination of the PPP leader Benazir Bhutto, the statement said.
The Commission appealed to all political parties, welfare organisations, NGOs and concerned citizens to immediately provide relevant information.
The step was a part of effort to find out if the authorities were involved in harassment and intimidation, the statement said.
PPI adds: The information should be sent to the HRCP Karachi Chapter, Unit 8, Ilaco House, Abdullah Haroon Road, Saddar, Karachi, Phone: (021) 5637131-32, Fax: (021) 5637133, Email: hrcpcyber.net.pk
