Miguel Del Carril shines in Gold Cup

LAHORE, Feb 19: A decisive goal by five-goal Miguel Del Carril helped Telenor beat Lindt Chocolate 7-6 in the national polo championship for the Quaid-i-Azam Gold Cup with the deciding of three more matches on Tuesday.

The winners earned a 2-1 lead in the first chukker as Carril and Ahmad Nawaz Tiwana struck one goal each. Ahmad Zubair scored for the losing side. The score was 4-1 in the winners’ favour as Carril contributed back to back goals in the second chukker. But the losing side through five-goal Ignacio Toccalino came back into the game turning it to 6-5 at the end of the fourth chukker.

Toccalino fired two in the third chukker and three in the next. Ahmad hit his second for the winners. But Carril turned hero first, restoring the parity to 6-6 in the fifth chukker to take the game to an extra chukker when another penalty shot was converted to complete the win.

Meanwhile ABN Amro Bank earned a 9-6 win against Guard Rice/Al Khan. Jose Rivas (4), Hissam Ali Hyder (2), Sufi Mohammad Amir (2) and Sufi Mhammad Haris were the scorers. Manual Crespo (2), Raja Samiullah (2), and Taimur Ali Malik and Junaid Ahmad with one goal each reduced the margin.

Seven goals out of a total of eight by Julio Nevillo Astrada helped LG/Rangers beat Emaar 8-5. Asif Zahoor scored the remaining one goal. Diego White (2), Sattar Niazi (2) and Mir Shoaib Ahmad (1) were the scorers for the losing side.—Sports Reporter
