SANTIAGO, March 7: A last-minute goal from Rob Moore gave Great Britain a 3-2 win over India on Thursday to strike a psychological blow ahead of the two sides’ showdown on Sunday in the 2008 Olympics men’s field hockey qualifier.
Moore converted a free-hit after Prabjhot Singh had come under pressure as the clock ticked down in the latest round-robin match in the six-nation qualifying competition.
India, the eight-time Olympic gold medallists, had taken the lead in the second minute through VR Raghunath from a penalty corner before Richard Mantell levelled for the 1988 Olympic champions in the 15th minute.
Jonty Clarke made it 2-1 after being set-up with a pass from Richard Alexander in the 46th minute before Raghunath equalised for India five minutes from the end after a fine pass from skipper Dilip Tirkey.
The teams were poised for a share of the spoils ahead of Sunday’s crucial classification match but Moore popped-up to see the British to victory. Later Thursday, Austria tackle Mexico while Russia face Chile.—AFP
