LAHORE, March 9: One kilo packs of ghee or cooking oil remained in great demand at Sunday bazaars though there was no difference in the prices at nearby markets or shops.

Except for Shadman, Wahdat Colony and Model Town Sunday bazaars, famous brand ghee or cooking oil was not available at these makeshift markets where green chillies and lemons were being sold above the price fixed by the market committee.

The prices of onion, tomato, ginger, bringer, cabbage, radish and sweet potato remained unchanged, while those of other vegetables’ registered an increase compared to the last week at these makeshift markets arranged by the city district government of Lahore to provide people subsidised edibles.

Sunday bazaars are held at Shadman Link Road, Wahdat Colony, Baghbanpura, Shadbagh, GT Road near Shalamar Gardens, Gulshan-i-Ravi, Moon Market of Allama Iqbal Town, Sabzazaar, R Block of Model Town, Green Town, G Block of Wapda Town, Jallo Morr, Ravi Road and opposite Rangers Headquarters.

Flour was available at almost all bazaars at the revised price of Rs290 per 20 kilo bag, but buyers seemed least interested because it was now easily available in the open market. The Punjab government had increased the flour prices from Rs275 to Rs290 on the demand of flour millers that came after a surge in the prices of petroleum products and electricity tariff.

Chicken meat was sold for Rs116 per kilo at these markets, while it was available in different areas of the city for Rs113 to Rs115 per kilo. The market committee had increased the price of potatoes by Re1 per kilo against last week’s price of Rs5 to Rs8 per kilo. However, the vegetable was sold for Rs8 to Rs10 per kilo at all Sunday bazaars.

The official price of onion remained unchanged between Rs5 to Rs8 per kilo, but it was available for Rs6 to Rs10 per kilo. Tomato price was fixed at Rs18 to Rs22 per kilo, but it was sold at Rs21 to Rs25 per kilo. Cucumber prices declined by Rs6 per kilo and were fixed at Rs18 to Rs22 per kilo, but it was sold for Rs22 to Rs25 per kilo.

The price of green chillies was fixed at Rs120 to Rs130 per kilo against last week’s Rs90 to Rs100 per kilo, but vendors were selling these for Rs160 per kilo and charging Rs40 to Rs50 for 250 grams.

Similarly, lemon prices were increased from last week’s Rs60 to Rs80 per kilo to Rs100 to Rs120 per kilo, but these were sold for Rs130 to Rs150 per kilo and Rs40 to Rs50 per 250 grams.

The price of garlic (local) was fixed at Rs20 to Rs35 per kilo against last week’s Rs30 to Rs40 per kilo. However, it was sold for Rs40 per kilo. Garlic (China) price was fixed at Rs20 to Rs25 per kilo, but it was sold for Rs30 per kilo.
