ISLAMABAD, March 28: A delegation of women lawyers from Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad and Lahore on Friday called on Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari to condole over the assassination of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto.
The women lawyers apprised the PPP co-chairman about the problems being faced by the legal practitioners in general and women lawyers in particular.
They also praised the PPP leadership for making possible the release of deposed judges, says a party handout.
Talking to the delegation, Mr Zardari said he was pursuing the mission of Ms Bhutto, who always struggled for women empowerment, adding that the party would make sure that women were empowered.
He said the sacrifices made by the PPP workers for independent judiciary were now a part of history. He said the PPP had taken the responsibility to save the country in accordance with the last wish of Ms Bhutto.
Mr Zardari said the PPP did not want special quota for women rather equal rights for women in every field. He said during his over 11 years incarceration, he had witnessed all the faults and corruption in the judicial system and these had to be rooted out with collective efforts.
He said the dream of independent and sovereign judiciary would materialise because the PPP had been the prime victim of this system.
“The PPP has suffered the most because of corruption and irregularities in the judicial system from Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s judicial murder to this day,” he said.
“We have lived our lives but we have got this opportunity now that we should work for our future generations to come. We want to make such laws and create such system which cannot be trampled over by any dictator,” he added.
PPP MNA Mehreen Anwar Raja and lawyers Nayyar Bokhari, Shafqat Abbasi, Haroon Rasheed and Aleem Abbasi were also present on the occasion.
Meanwhile, Mr Zardari through a message congratulated the newly-elected office-bearers of the High Court Bar Association, Larkana.
