HYDERABAD, March 30: The Sindh Chamber of Agriculture has hailed the announcement of Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani to increase the support price of wheat from Rs510 per 40 kg to Rs625, but expressed concern over the inordinate increase in prices of fertiliser, diesel and seed.

It urged the government to release water in the watercourses of Sukkur barrage.

A meeting of the chamber was held here on Sunday under the chairmanship of its senior vice-president Mir Murad Ali Talpur. It congratulated the prime minister on the decision to increase the support price of wheat.

The meeting pointed out that water was badly needed for the early sowing of Kharif crops and feared that if it was not released, the growers would suffer.

The meeting severely criticised the agriculture department for its failure to provide agricultural machinery to the growers in time.

They demanded an inquiry against the agriculture department in this regard.

They said that the early sowing of cotton crop was about to start but the Sindh Seed Corporation had failed to bring the certified seed of cotton in the market.

It demanded certified seeds should be made available to the growers without any delay.

It further demanded that the sugar mills should be directed to pay the fixed price of sugarcane to growers.

Anwar Bachani, Agha Nasrullah, Mir Imdad Talpur, Mohammad Khan Sarejo and others attended the meeting.
