LAHORE, April 18: The Pakistan Junior hockey team drew 3-3 against Olympic qualifier South Africa’s senior outfit at Durban on Thursday, according to a message received here.

Both teams were locked at 3-3 at half time with the second half remaining barren.

Prolific scorer Haseem Khan shot Pakistan into the lead in the second minute of the first half itself. But a few minutes later, South Africa with a field goal, brought the two sides on even keel.

This was followed by Pakistan earning a penalty stroke which Kashif Ali converted to put his side in front again.

Taking advantage of a loose tackle, South Africa restored parity through their second field goal.

A move from the right flank earned Pakistan a penalty corner which was converted into a third goal by deep defender Muhammad Ateeq. However, the South Africans fought back to reduce the deficit just before half time.

“Our defence in the first half was sluggish,” Chief coach Jehangir Butt is reported to have said after the match.

“We gave too much room to South Africa and they took full advantage of it. Perhaps the boys were tired after the eight-hour bus travel from Johannesburg to Durban. Still our defenders put up a resolute fight and I am satisfied with their performance in the second period,” he added.
