‘Reformers’ gaining strength

Published April 22, 2008

ISLAMABAD, April 21: The PML-Q is facing the worst crisis after defeat in the Feb 18 polls as MNAs Kashmala Tariq, Riaz Fatiana, Nasrullah Bijarani and Nauman Langrial have formed a “reformers group” in the party, DawnNews said on Monday. The group claims to have the support of 22 MNAs.

The core demands of the group are removal of PML-Q secretary-general Mushahid Hussain Syed and parliamentary leader Faisal Saleh Hayat.

The PML-Q parliamentary party meeting, however, resolved that no internal issue would be discussed in the media.

The meeting discussed the emergence of the ‘reformers group’ within the party and resolved that concerns of the dissident group would be addressed and all issues would be resolved at party meetings.

Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi said the meeting had resolved to address the concerns of legislators from the smaller provinces.

“We would hold a separate meeting of the MNAs from the smaller provinces and all issues pertaining to them would be addressed amicably.” The meeting also discussed the possible parliamentary resolution about the reinstatement of judges.

The PML-Q legal team would brief the party on Wednesday.

Pervaiz Elahi said the government had not contacted the opposition over the judges’ issue.

He said the PML-Q candidates would contest by-elections to all constituencies.—APP
