QUETTA, April 23: The vice-chancellor and director general of human resource of the Balochistan University have resigned in protest against a decision of the governor-cum-chancellor to review cases of two sacked teachers.

Major (retd) Tahir Qazi confirmed to Dawn that he and Vice-Chancellor Brig (retd) Agha Gul Ahmed had submitted their resignations to Governor Nawab Zulfiqar Ali Magsi on April 21.

He said the university administration had dismissed Agha Mohammad Nasir, lecturer in the university’s Urdu department, and Zakir Hussain Jadoon, former principal of the Quetta Law College, in accordance with rules and regulations. He said the former governor-cum-chancellor had also endorsed the decision.

Mr Tahir said that Nawab Magsi had earlier ordered a review of the cases, but later retained the dismissal decision of the university administration.

The sacked teachers went on hunger strike on April 14 against the decision. The governor invited the teachers for a meeting at the Governor’s House on Wednesday, but the meeting could not be held because of the murder of the pro vice-chancellor of the university on Tuesday.

Mr Tahir said he and the vice-chancellor had resigned because they wanted to uphold rules and regulations and maintain discipline in the campus.
