KARACHI, May 8: The parents of Arsalan, who was shot and killed on Wednesday by his maternal cousin after being mistaken for a thief, pardoned their nephew who accidentally caused the death of their only son.The 21-year-old victim entered his maternal uncle’s Kauser Town house in Khokhrapar at around 4.15am through a window to meet his 15-year-old cousin, Rida, whom he wanted to marry.

The family mistook him for a thief and the victim’s maternal cousin, Adeel Shaikh, son of Saleem Shaikh, shot and killed him.

The young man, who was a second-year student at a college, had returned from Bahrain two years ago and was staying with his paternal cousin, Dr Akbar Nasir, in Kauser Town.

The police registered a murder case against Adeel Shaikh, 24, on the complaint of Dr Nasir and arrested the suspect.

The SHO of Khokhrapar, Khalid Nadeem, told Dawn that the police had registered the murder case under Section 302 of the PPC because the victim’s parents were abroad and they were scheduled to attend the last rites of their son.

“Both Mr and Mrs Naeem Ahmed have pardoned their nephew for the accidental killing of their son,” he said and added that the victim was shot mistakenly.

Kaleem Shaikh, uncle of the victim and father of Rida, told Dawn that Adeel was the son of his brother and he had been living with him for the past several years. “My sister and brother-in-law have pardoned Adeel,” he added.

The SHO said Adeel would be produced in court on Friday. “The victim’s parent will pardon the suspect before the court which will order the release of the suspect,” he added.

The SHO said it was a straight case of mistaken identity. “The family immediately reported the incident to the police and the investigators did not find any contradiction in the statements of family members,” he added.

He said Arsalan had hidden himself in a cupboard and Adeel shot him impulsively. He said he along with other investigators visited the spot.
