GUJRAT, June 3: A soldier of the Pakistan army was killed and four others injured when a speeding van ran them over near Biyowali village on Jalalpur Jattan Road on Tuesday.
Reports reaching here suggested that the soldiers were replacing a punctured tyre of their vehicle when the van coming from Jalalpur Jattan hit them, killing Irfan of the Sindh Regiment on the spot and left Sabir Husain, Younis Ali, Qadeer and Anwar injured. They were taken to the Combined Military Hospital in Kharian.
The Sadar police have registered a case against the absconding driver.
In another incident, a driver and a helper were killed when their oil-tanker rammed into a stationary truck near the vegetable market on GT Road in Lalamusa.
They were identified as driver Naveed of Gujranwala and helper Tanveer, of Sheikhupura.
DEMO: Around 100 activists of the Jamaat-i-Islami on Tuesday staged a protest demonstration at Nawab Sahib Chowk against price hike and loadshedding.
JI district amir Dr Tariq Salim led the demonstrators, including Dr Syed Ehsanullah, Mir Afzal, Raja Naveed and Chaudhry Ehsan Warraich.
