Chakkis shut down in protest

MIRPURKHAS, June 4: On the call of the Chakki Owners Association, chakkis (small flour mills) remain closed in and outskirts of the city on Wednesday in protest against raids on flour mills by the district administration and imposition of fine.

Mirpurkhas Mukhtiarkar Abdul Sattar Hakro carried out raids on different chakkis on Tuesday and detained two chakki owners and imposed Rs1500 fine on them for selling flour at Rs25 per kilogramme.

The association decided to go on strike from Wednesday to protest against the raids, imposition of fine, and alleged harassing of chakkis owners. People faced hardships and were unable to find wheat flour.

The association hanged black banners inscribed with their demands at different places in the city and other towns of the district.

Chairman chakkis association Liaquat Ali Qureshi, vice-chairman Abdul Rasheed Talli and general secretary Nadeem Ahmed told reporters that their strike would continue till the resolution of their problems.

They said that in open market wheat was selling at Rs800 to Rs820 per 40 kilogrammes as a result they were compelled to sell flour at Rs26 per kilogramme.
