LAHORE, June 4: Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Muhammad Ali Mian says Pakistan can increase its share in the international gems and jewellery market by adopting improved mining, cutting, polishing and branding its products properly.

At a two-day seminar on ‘Role of jewellery segment in economic uplift’ at the LCCI on Wednesday, he said India had 80 per cent share in the international diamond market at present.

Pakistan had the potential to increase its share in the international market with its rich mineral resources by providing modern mining and processing techniques.

The chamber was ready to provide all possible assistance for the development of the jewellery sector.

Ms. Sarwat Abdul Razzak said the Pakistani gem stones were of very superior quality but were exported in rough shape due to lack of modern cutting and polishing techniques. Gems and jewellery which could be produced within the country were also being imported due to non-availability of modern technology. An institution was needed for technical guidance of gems and jewellery sector businessmen.
