KARACHI, June 13: A division bench of the Sindh High Court comprising Justice Dr Rana M. Shamim and Justice Ghulam Dastagir A. Shahani dismissed appeals filed by two convicts in a narcotics smuggling case but reduced the amount of fine.

A Ghanaian national, Jaffer Johri Shafeh, had moved an appeal against his 30-month imprisonment and a fine of Rs40,000 awarded by the Control for Narcotics Substance Court (CNS court). He was arrested at the Karachi airport by the Anti-Narcotic Force (ANF) following recovery of 66 heroin capsules weighing 750 grams from his body. The appellate bench on Friday maintained the prison term but reduced the fine amount to Rs20,000.

The bench also reduced the amount of fine imposed on another convict, Najeeb, from Rs30,000 to Rs5,000 while disposing of his separate appeal.

The ANF had recovered 50 heroin capsule containing 450 grams from his body and the CNS Court had sentenced him to two-year imprisonment, besides imposing the fine.

The same bench issued bailable warrants for the arrest of two murder accused acquitted by a sessions court.

A criminal revision application was filed by Khalid Nawaz Khan Marwat challenging the acquittal of accused Mohammad Nawaz Butt and Tipu Shehzad. They were accused of killing Hamid Nawaz Khan Marwat.—APP
