KARACHI, June 24: Relatives of two victims of an accident staged a violent protest against the doctors at the emergency centre of the Civil Hospital Karachi after they reportedly found one of the two fatally wounded victims alive in the mortuary on Tuesday.

Soldier Bazaar police said two motorcyclists were knocked down by a coach near the Numaish roundabout and they were taken to the Civil Hospital, where they were identified as Jalil Ahmed, son of Ghulam Nabi, and Maqsood, son of Maula Dad, residents of Sohrab Goth.

Hospital sources said both victims were shifted to the hospital’s mortuary from the emergency centre after they were pronounced dead by the chief medical officer (CMO), Iqbal Bhatti.

However, they said the victims’ relatives became enraged when they found Jalil Ahmed still alive at the mortuary.

Sources said the enraged relatives took the fatally wounded victim to the Liaquat National Hospital, where he succumbed to his wounds.

They said the protesters also manhandled some doctors and paramedics at the emergency before they left.

Soldier Bazaar police said the coach driver sped away following the accident, but the police tracked down the vehicle and impounded it. They said an onlooker noted down the registration number of the Shandaar coach that had hit the victims. The police said they tracked down the owner of the vehicle and efforts were being made to identify and arrest the driver.

A relative of victim Jalil, Haji Ateeq, lodged a complaint against the chief medical officer of the Civil Hospital at the Risala police station.

The complainant alleged that Jalil died due to the negligence and inefficiency of the doctor who pronounced the victim dead and sent him to the mortuary though he was alive. He alleged that the victim was alive and his life could be saved if he had not been presumed dead and sent to the mortuary.

Haji Ateeq alleged that the victim remained in the mortuary for over three hours.

Risala police said they had received the application. They said any action on the application would be taken after consulting senior police officials.

Sources said the two victims were cousins and hailed from Quetta. They were staying here with their uncle at Sohrab Goth.

Sources said victim Maqsood was married a year ago, while Jalil’s engagement was scheduled after five days.
