LAHORE, June 28: A father of four allegedly committed suicide for failing to give Rs48,000 in cash he lost in bet to bookies at Kahna on Saturday.
Police said Farhan Javed, 55, a resident of Sundar area, risked his hard-earned income on a recent Pakistan-India cricket match after negotiating with some local bookies on Thursday last.
He, however, lost the bet but failed to pay the amount due to financial constraints. Police said the winner bookies demanded money and threatened Farhan with dire consequences for his failure to go by his word. The bookies hurled threat of kidnapping his minor children.
On Saturday, the disappointed man locked himself in a room and took poison. He breathed his last on way to the Lahore General Hospital. The body was handed over to the family without autopsy.
No case was registered as the Kahna and Manga Mandi police teams locked horns over jurisdiction.
FOUND DEAD: A woman was found dead on a road near Ichhra on Saturday.
Police suspected that the woman was sexually assaulted and later strangulated by some people. A case was registered against unknown killers.
