KARACHI, July 2: The customs duty collection during 2007-08 recorded 11 per cent growth at Rs114.206 billion over last year’s revenue of Rs103.115 billion.
According to official figures the customs duty collections by all the collectorates stood higher by one per cent over the target fixed by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) at Rs112.980 billion.
The gross collection of duty during the year under review when rationalised with currency parity and cost of imported goods did not show any change in term of money value.
However, the Model Customs Collectorate (MCC), whose target was revised thrice by the FBR from Rs30 billion to Rs41.5 billion stood short by 5 per cent but it recorded a remarkable growth of 39 per cent in duty collection over last year.
The official figures disclose that the duty collection by MCC during out-going fiscal year stood at Rs39.249 billion as against Rs28.312 billion collected last year, thereby showing an increase of 39 per cent.
However, the Appraisement collectorate on collecting Rs34.168 billion in customs duty during 2007-08 exceeded its target by 16 per cent of Rs29.500 billion but remained short by 8 per cent over last year collection of Rs36.985 billion.
But on the rationalisation against currency parity and prices of imported goods the duty collection by the Appraisement collectorate for 2007-08 turns out to be negative growth of up to 17 per cent instead of 8 per cent.
Similarly, the Appraisement collectorate at Port Qasim, while failing to meet the duty collection target of Rs30.800 billion or 6 per cent short at Rs29.067 billion indicated improvement over the previous year’s collection of Rs27.244 billion or 7 per cent higher.
However, upon rationalisation against currency parity and cost of imported goods the growth in the duty collection turns out to be negative by 4 per cent.
The Preventive collectorate, however, made all round growth in customs duty collection at Rs11.722 billion or 5 per cent higher than the target of Rs11.180 billion and 11 per cent more than the previous year’s collection at Rs10.574 billion.
The customs duty collection on import of POL products increased to Rs6.192 billion or 28.12 per cent over the previous year when collection stood at Rs4.911 billion.
