KOLKATA, July 30: Jagmohan Dalmiya has been elected president of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB).

Dalmiya, the first Asian president of the International Cricket Council from 1997-2000, beat incumbent Prasun Mukherjee by 71 to 47 votes, the Press Trust of India reported on Tuesday.

The association is based in Eden Gardens, India’s largest cricket ground, and runs all international and domestic cricket played there.

Dalmiya quit as president of CAB in December 2006 after he was suspended by the Indian cricket board.

In March, police in Mumbai charged Dalmiya with misappropriating nearly $720,000 from a bank account for the 1996 World Cup that was jointly hosted by India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Dalmiya, who was chief organizer of the 1996 tournament, has denied any wrongdoing.

From 2001 to 2004, Dalmiya was president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India. After the presidency, Dalmiya was marginalized in the BCCI in 2005 when his supporters were ousted in a bitterly-contested election.—AP
