HYDERABAD, Aug 3: A man and a woman were killed and about 50 people, seven among them children, were injured when houses collapsed and three canals developed breaches as heavy rains continued to lash parts of lower and upper Sindh on Sunday.

In Hyderabad, rain, which had started on Saturday continued intermittently. Meteorological office recorded 85.5 millimetre of rain at its airport office from Saturday night till Sunday morning, bringing mercury down to 24.4 degree Celsius from 30.

Power supply remained suspended and Wasa had to commission its standby generators to drain out rainwater from flooded localities.

In Shikarpur, a man was killed and 26 others sustained injuries as heavy rain lashed the city and its adjoining areas on Saturday night and Sunday. One Badshah Khan Jagirani of Jagirani village was killed when his house collapsed and more than 20 people including a woman and children were injured after a number of old mud-thatched houses caved in.

A woman was seriously injured and five men received minor injuries when roofs and walls of their houses collapsed in Garhi Yasin, Khanpur and Lakhi talukas.

In Khairpur, five people were injured when roof of a hotel collapsed. The injured Khanzado Pahtan Moosa Pathan, Rano, Rahib and Sakhi were taking tea at the hotel when the incident took place.

Roofs of two houses collapsed in Mill Colony but there were no reports of any loss to life while power supply went off with first drop of rain.

Pandhro Wah, Veeho Wah and Ali Gunj Wah of taluka Faiz Gunj developed 20 to 30 foot breaches and a number of electric poles were uprooted near Pat Eiden, leading to suspension of power supply to Faiz Gunj taluka.

In Nawabshah, Muskaan, 6, and Husnain, 4, children of Ms Zahida were injured when roof of their house collapsed in Bhangwar Colony on Sunday. It rained lightly in Nawabshah, Daur, Bandhi, Qazi Ahmed, Doulatpur, Sakrand, 60-Mils, Jam Sahab and their adjoining areas.

In Dadu, heavy rains in Kohistan mountains raised level of water in Baran and Nai Sann nulahs as parts of Dadu and Jamshoro districts received rain. Rain in mountain areas caused level of water in Nai Gaaj Nala to rise to 10-foot and water level in Manchhar Lake rose to 107 feet RL. Irrigation officials are discharging 1,600 cusec water from the lake into the River Indus to maintain its level. In Mirpurkhas and its adjoining areas, Kot Ghulam Mohammad, Digri, Kunri, Jhuddo, Tando Jan Mohammad and Mirwah Gorchani it rained lightly.

In Sukkur, torrential rain hit the city and its adjoining areas, inundating the main roads and streets and causing suspension of power supply. On the other hand, floodwater coming from Koh-i-Suleman Balochistan inundated more than 15 villages of Kashmore, forcing villagers to evacuate to safer places.

The affected villages are Mazari, Ghulam Hussain Mazari, Rasool Bux Mazari, Haji Atul, Gullan Kot, Keenjhar and others.

In Naushahro Feroze, Moro, Tharushah, Bhirya, Kandiaro, Mehrabpur, Halani, Mithiani, Padidan and their adjoining areas it rained heavily on Sunday, causing sewerage system of the towns to collapse.

In Larkana and Qambar-Shahdadkot districts, a woman died and dozen other people were injured in rain-related incidents and caused damages to the relics of Moenjodaro.

The inadequate drainage system left many low-lying areas flooded with rainwater in the districts, where it had been raining for the third day running on Sunday.

Imrah Khatoon Lashari, 50, was killed when the roof of her house caved in, in Meena village near Qambar while Naveed, 6 and Aijaz, 7, were injured. Labourers Abdul Majeed Brohi, Zahid Brohi, Ghulam Muhammed Totani working at a rice mill in Qambar after the roof of the mill collapsed.

Zahid Noonari was injured when roof of a hotel caved in and in Kamboh mohalla of Shahdadkot Najma, 5, and Haneef, 8, were injured when the roof of their house collapsed.

Sikandar Ali Mastoi and his daughter Sawera, 8, were injured when the roof of their house near Degree College caved in while Roshan Mirani and Andal Shiakh were injured in Dokri.

Reports from Badah said that Dhingano Jalbani, Bakhar Karira, Lali ja Bhan, Izat ji Wandh, Noorang Jalbani and Ali Muhammed Gadhi flooded with rainwater.
