HYDERABAD: Dams opposed

Published August 29, 2008

HYDERABAD, Aug 28: Awami Tehrik chief Rasool Bux Palijo has criticised the government on its announcement to construct the Kalabagh and Akhori dams and said that that amounted to betrayal of the trust of people of Sindh.

In a statement faxed to Dawn, Mr. Palijo, said that on the one hand robberies were being committed on the Indus waters and natural resources of the province and on the other hand anti-Sindh dams were being constructed.

He said Chashma-Jehlum and Taunsa-Panjnad link canals, Greater Thal Canal and more than 80 other water channels dug out after the creation of Pakistan had destroyed the agrarian economy of Sindh.

He called upon the people to oppose the proposed construction of Kalabagh dam.
