Chevening winners get award letters

LAHORE, Sept 1: Jennifer Wilkes, who is British High Commission’s deputy head for press and public affairs, presented on Monday award letters to five successful candidates of the British Chevening Scholarship programme, who are leaving for their postgraduate studies in the United Kingdom next month.

The five successful candidates, who are availing the fully-funded one-year postgraduate studies are: Sumaira Latif for her MA in Film and Television Production at the University of Bristol; Salman Ali Khan for MA in Law Culture and Society at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London; Sabeen Inam for her MA in Medical Anthropology at the University of Sussex; Zarak Mirza for his MSc in Economics and Public Policy at the University of Bristol and Usman Ali Khan for his MSc in Development Studies at SOAS, University of London.

Speaking on the occasion, Ms Wilkes said the standard of higher education in the United Kingdom was far high as compared to any other country in the world.

She said the British Chevening Scholarships programme was funded by the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office and managed by the British High Commission and the British Council in Pakistan. She said the scholarships were awarded to country’s some finest young people every year.

Ms Wilkes said successful candidates qualified for one year’s postgraduate study in a wide variety of subjects including management, media studies, international relations,

law, gender studies, social development, public administration etc.

This year, she said, as many as 16 scholars from Pakistan would be leaving for the United Kingdom in Oct to pursue their higher studies.

Mariya Afzal, who is head of programmes at British Council, Lahore, said the Chevening Scholarships for 2009-10 had been announced.

The last date to submit applications would be Sept 15. The application forms were available at British Council’s website: www.britishcouncil.org.pk.
