KARACHI: Steps to control prices

Published September 23, 2008

KARACHI, Sept 22: The prices of essential commodities like pulses, ghee, oil, rice, beans, chickpeas (Kabuli chana), gram flour (Baisan) have been reportedly reduced by wholesalers, but retailers are reluctant to sell the items on reduced rates announced by the Enterprise and Investment Promotion (E&IP) group of offices of the City District Government Karachi (CDGK).

Some retailers of vegetables and fruit are also not following the price-list, noted the provincial minister for the bureau of supply and prices, Syed Shoaib Ahmed Bukhari, in a letter sent to the district coordination officer of Karachi quoting press reports on Monday.

The minister wrote to the DCO: “You being the controller general of prices of Karachi are required to direct your subordinates, specially the E&IP group of offices of CDGK, to revise the prices accordingly at once and issue [price] lists for display at retailer markets.”

According to the reduced price-list, the price of rice basmati has been reduced to Rs55 per kg from Rs70 per kg, rice irri-6 reduced to Rs34 per kg from Rs41, rice (super kernel basmati) reduced to Rs80-92 per kg from Rs113, pulses (chana) reduced to Rs56 per kg from Rs63, chickpeas (Kabuli chana) reduced to Rs70 from Rs86, ghee (vanaspati) reduced to Rs120 per kg from Rs140-150 per kg, red lobia reduced to Rs120 per kg from Rs140-150 per kg.—PPI
