LAHORE, Oct 25: National Assembly Speaker Dr Fehmida Mirza said on Saturday that a speakers’ conference would be held in Lahore for better communication among all the assemblies.
“The date and agenda of the conference will be announced later,” she said while addressing a press conference during her visit to the Punjab Assembly. Punjab Assembly Speaker Rana Muhammad Iqbal, Deputy Speaker Rana Mashhood and Punjab Finance Minister Tanvir Ashraf Kaira were also present.
She said assemblies were the best forums to resolve all national issues and dialogues were the best way to tackle the issues confronting the country.
Criticising the previous military regime for creating crises of power, law and order and flour, she said the dictatorship had damaged all institutions of the country during the last 11 years.
The NA speaker urged all political parties to forge unity to overcome the current issues, including power, law and order, flour and militancy in the tribal areas.
She appreciated the role of politicians belonging to all political parties for creating a consensus for the passage of a 14-point resolution during the in-camera joint session of parliament.
“All parties were given equal representation on the committee constituted to pass the resolution,” she added.
She said the government had set a positive example by appointing opposition leader as chairman of the public accounts committee while opposition members were being awarded representation on the standing committees of the National Assembly.
She stressed the need for equal distribution of resources among all the provinces, and added the Balochistan issue should be resolved through dialogue.
Dr Fehmida called upon the political leaders to unite for the survival of the country as it was passing through a critical juncture.
“A national consensus is vital for the resolution of all problems,” she added. She expressed her confidence that the parliament would complete its constitutional tenure.
Earlier, Fahmida Mirza inspected the historic PA building.
