RAWALPINDI, Oct 31: Regional Police Officer Nasir Khan Durrani on Friday said the Police Order 2002 needed to be reviewed as it has not given desired results.
Talking to Dawn on different issues related to the law and order and policing he said the police force should be independent but accountable to law.
He reiterated his commitment to fight crime.
Replying to a question regarding politicizing of police, Mr Durrani admitted that merit has been ignored in some appointments at lower level.
“There has been no political interference at top level appointments and even other matters. We have very clear instruction from the government to strictly follow merit,” Mr Durrani said.
The RPO said to ensure justice, he has been listening to complainants who came to his office and he is trying to give relief to the victims and nearly 80 per cent to 90 percent people are satisfied.
He said the detection required technical things involved in, which we needed. Had these technical facilities been available to the police, the detection rate would have been much higher.
He said he has started surprise inspection of different police stations to check what was happening there and how the victims are being treated by the police at police station level.
He said the police rule made by British was comprehensive and according to it, an SDPO must have inspection of the police record, but it was not being done at any level.
The RPO said due to his surprise inspections, a lot of improvement in policing has been notices.
Furthermore, the reconciliatory committees are being involved to settle disputes and other social problems and shortly these committees would be activated.
Mr Durrani said the police force have been doing all its efforts to check terrorists. He said as part of police strategy, sniffer dogs are being used to detect explosive and random checking of vehicles is being done.
He said the activities of those people who had been having involved in criminal activities are being watched strictly by the police.
The RPO said Henious Crimes Management Cell has been set up at Range Office where crime record is being compiled.
Motorway police help is being sought to check the vehicle theft as it has been going unchecked.
He expressed his concern over the issue related to the return of the loot recovered by the police from arrested gangs of culprits. He said it is both the police and judiciary responsible for it.
