KARACHI, Nov 7: A suspected member of the Rehman Dakait gang was killed by unidentified attackers in Lyari on Friday.
Police said 25-year-old Akhtar Ali was sitting outside his house in Kalri area in the jurisdiction of the Baghdadi police when the attackers came on a motorcycle and opened fire on him. They escaped after the attack.
The victim sustained multiple bullet wounds and was rushed to the Civil Hospital where he died during initial treatment, police said. Police suspected that the killing was a result of internal strife within the gang.
A senior police officer said “it was a result of infighting within the Rehman Dakait gang which has now come out in the open”.
Tension gripped the area after the incident.
However, some area people were of the opinion that the police were trying to hide the fact that the rival gang of Ghaffar Zakri had begun to flex its muscles.
Youth shot dead
In another incident, an 18-year-old man was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Steel Town area on Friday morning.
Police said the attackers shot Gul Yaseen near Gulshan-i-Hadeed. The victim died before he could be shifted to the Jinnah Hospital.
Police said they were investigating the case but were not sure of the motive of the killing. The young man was a resident of Gulshan-i-Hadeed.
Two die in accidents
Two people died in separate road accidents in different parts of the city on Friday.
Police said fifty-year-old Riaz Ahmed died when he was hit by a fast-moving van while he was crossing the main Nazimabad road.
The victim was shifted to the nearby Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The accident occurred in front of the Baqai Hospital. The victim was the resident of Green Town, Shah Faisal Colony.
In other incident, a young motorcyclist died when he was hit by a fast-moving car in North Karachi.
Police said the victim was identified as Murtaza. He was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Ten-year-old shot
A 10-year-old girl died in mysterious circumstances at Liaquat Ashraf Colony in Mehmoodabad area on Friday night.
Police quoted the family members as saying that Naureen took out a pistol lying in the house and was playing with it when the gun went off by accident.
The girl was shifted to the Jinnah hospital where doctors pronounced her dead on arrival.
The SP of the Jamshed town, Javed Akbar Riaz, said that the family was saying that it was an accident, but things would become clear after further investigation.
The deceased was the daughter of a sub-inspector, Bashir, who was posted at the Investigation wing of the Gulistan-i-Jauhar police station.
Suicide attempt
A man said to be mentally challenged set himself on fire in a graveyard in Liaquatabad on Friday. Police identified the man as Tufail. They said he used to hang around in the graveyard of C-1 Area.
Police said the man poured kerosene on himself before setting himself on fire.
He was admitted to the Civil Hospital in a critical condition.
