LAHORE, Dec 16: The feature race of the midweek Lahore Gymkhana races looks like an open competition when a card of seven events gets underway at the Racecourse on Wednesday.

A showdown is expected between a quartet of sprinters among the 11 runners drawn for the Kahna Plate, class VI division I and II to be gone over 1,000 metres.

The ones on chance are Brave Heart, Big Bird, Amazing Boy and Rania.

Five-Year-old bay mare Miss Brave Heart, who was placed second behind Victory Sargent on Sunday, should make amends by winning the race.

But this is not as easy in the presence of bay horse Big Bird, bay filly Rania and the bay colt Amazing Boy.

If on the job, all can make it a most competitive contest.

Again a keen contest between the mare Bird Fly and bay colt Geo Bhakkar is expected to provide the race-goers thrills in the sixth and supporting event with Strides To Moment ready to upset the apple cart.

The four-year-old bay filly Miss Tabinda, who had to her credit two back-to-back victories on the trot, is expected to complete a hat-trick of wins in the fifth race.

Mama Mia, Kamla and Murad King may be her challengers among the 10 runners drawn for the event. Kainat and Pretty Mehak look good in the dozen contestants to vie for the top honours in the fourth race. Kainat, placed on the top of the weight scales, is a speedy customer but Pretty Mehak enjoys handicap advantage at the low weight.

There are precedents when speed overcame handicap on many occasions.

Anarkali, Fruitful and Independent Day are the form runners in the third race. They should finish in the same order too. Anarkali, would have won last week but the doubtful handling by her rider made him lose the race.

The Shandar, King’s UK, Raftar-e-Sehar and Karmanwala quartet looks to be on equal chance in the second race. A good rider can take the advantage of occupying the winner’s enclosure.

On form, Shandar is better placed.

The opener, having eight runners, seems like a wide open affair because they are inconsistent in their performance and absolutely unreliable. Anyhow, three of them — Sana, Aa Ja Aa Ja and Faizan Love — look better to fight for the spoils. Sudden Attack had been backed by connections but failed to live up to expectations each time.

Four races will be contested over the sprinting distance of 800 metres while three will go over 1,000 metres. The first race will be held at 12.30pm.
