PESHAWAR, Dec 24: Ulema of the Sunni sect have assured the provincial government of their cooperation in maintaining peace and tranquillity during Muharram.
A delegation of the ulema led by Maulana Abdul Jalil Jan and Maulana Husain Madani held a meeting with the Peshawar divisional commissioner here on Wednesday.
Leaders of the NWFP Muttahida Amn Committee, Maulana Irshadul Haq Madani, Muneer Khan, Javed Ahmad Awan, Noor Gul Mohammad and Farhad Saraf, superintendents of police of city and cantonment circles, nazims of the four towns of Peshawar and representatives of the Anjuman Tableegh-i-Quran-o-Sunnah were also present.
Divisional Commissioner Shah Rukh Arbab appreciated the ulema for extending support to the government to ensure peace during Muharram.
He told the meeting that the provincial government had made elaborate security arrangements to maintain peace and a security plan for Peshawar had been devised.
The ulema requested the police high-ups to hold similar meetings with local ulema at the police station level.
They also suggested convening of a meeting with provincial ulema by NWFP Chief Minister Ameer Haider Khan Hoti in order to take them into confidence over measures to maintain peace during Muharram.
The commissioner assured the ulema that their suggestions would be brought into the notice of the chief minister and other quarters concerned.
KOHAT: The district administration nominated an eight-member committee of Shia and Sunni elders who will be held responsible for ensuring peace during Muharram.
The decision was taken at a meeting held here on Wednesday under District Coordination Officer Siraj Ahmed.
The meeting was attended by District Police Officer Abdullah Khan, heads of Wapda, health and municipal departments and elders of Shia and Sunni sects.
The DCO asked the line departments to submit within two days their reports regarding preparations for Muharram.
