Over 100 thrown out from MCG

MELBOURNE, Dec 26: More than 100 people were kicked out of the Boxing Day Test match between Australia and South Africa at the MCG on Friday, including a man wanted for a pitch invasion at the same ground two years ago.

The man was arrested for being drunk and police discovered he had an outstanding warrant for not appearing in court over an MCG ground invasion during the Ashes series in 2006.

Melbourne’s Police Superintendent Stephen Leane said while the majority of fans were well behaved the area formerly known as ‘Bay 13’ drew attention from police on Friday.

Police arrested 14 people, including two for assaults and 12 for being drunk, while another 109 people were evicted.

Thirty-five of them were issued with infringement notices for liquor and behavioural offences.

“There’s still an element of the crowd that are intent on coming into the ground, drinking to excess and annoying people,” Leane said. “We will continue to provide an increased presence at the ground over the duration of the match to ensure patrons are able to enjoy the game.”—Agencies
