HYDERABAD, Jan 10: DIG Sanaullah Abbasi, who had been assigned the task to probe afresh the killing of Tasleem Solangi, reportedly thrown before dogs before being shot dead on the orders of a jirga held in Hajna Shah village of Khairpur in March last year, would visit the village on Tuesday

Hyderabad zone DIG Mr Abbasi was investigating the case on the orders issued by the President’s House.

A preliminary report on the killing had earlier been submitted by PPP MNA Nafisa Shah, former district nazim of Khairpur, to the president when the matter was widely reported in media after disclosure of the incident by the girl’s parents in Karachi.

“Gulsher Solangi and his wife, Zikra Solangi appeared before me and their statements have been recorded today. I will be visiting Khairpur on Tuesday for on the spot inquiries,” DIG Abbasi told Dawn over phone on Saturday.

About the witnesses’ statements, he said that they repeated their allegations. “They threw my daughter before dogs before shooting her dead,” he quoted Gulsher as saying.

Mr Abbasi said that Solangi’s wife Zikra repeated her claim that she had been threatened with dire consequences and the jirga had been held, which had also announced some compensation.

The parents called for arrest of the people responsible for holding the jirga, which had declared their daughter as kari (woman accused of having illicit relations with a man).

The members of the jirga have been at large so far, according to Solangi. Some people who were accused by the FIR have been held by Khairpur police.

The report, submitted earlier, contested the claim that Tasleem Solangi had been thrown before dogs. “Even the medical report disputes the claim that the girl had been thrown before dogs,” he added.

Tasleem Solangi died in Hajna Shah area of Khairpur district in the first week of March 2008 in the limits of Ahemdpur police station. His father claimed to be an eyewitness of the incident.

The girl’s parents who live in Karachi and still fear for their lives could not be reached for more details about the fresh inquiry, initiated by Hyderabad DIG. MNA Nafisa Shah was not available for comments.
