ISLAMABAD, Jan 11: Disgraced Pakistan paceman Mohammad Asif will never set foot in the UAE again after security authorities found him guilty of carrying 0.24 grams of opium during his transit stay in June last year.

In its ‘legal description’ issued from the Dubai Public Prosecutor (DPP), alerted it’s Central Investigation Department (CID), UAE: “The concerned authorities in CID should be notified to take all necessary action to deport the accused from the State and include his [Asif’s] name in the list of persons prohibited from entering the state once again.”

According to documents made available to Dawn, the DPP had held the lanky pacer responsible for possessing trifle amount of narcotics during his transit stay.

Asif was returning from India via Dubai to Pakistan after featuring in the Indian Premier League last June.

He was subsequently detained in the UAE for 19 days and was later deported after top level government dignitaries intervened to save his skin.

The Criminal Laboratory Director’s report of Dubai Police General Headquarters was also attached with the investigating report which also confirmed that “sample subject of inspection is opium substance weighing 0.24 grams”.

During the interrogation conducted by the DPP, Asif continually denied the fact that he was carrying the contraband substance with him and alleged “the material found in his possession was a popular herbal ingredient used as an energy stimulant and that he had received the same from a hakeem [Herbal doctor] in Pakistan”.

According to the transcript of the investigation when Asif was asked: “What do you say about the contents of the seizure minutes saying that, upon inspecting your wallet a dark substance has been found suspected to be the narcotic drug weighing approximately 0.24 grams?”

Asif in his reply said: “This is untrue I don’t know the weight of the seized substance.

When asked when was the last time you used this substance? Asif said: “Four months before I came to the UAE, in Pakistan.

The pacer accepted during the course of investigation that the contraband item belonged to him. Asif also accepted that he used the substance by swallowing it with milk.

The former chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Dr Nasim Ashraf then formed a probe committee to investigate Asif’s issue. The committee was headed by the then Chief Operating Officer Shafqat Naghmi and PCB officials Nadeem Akram and Zakir Khan. However, the committee could not come up with its suggestions due to reshuffling in the senior ranks of the board after Dr Nasim’s resignation.
