KARACHI, Jan 17: The Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) has formed a committee aimed at ending parallelism which exists in some sports bodies at the provincial level. The names of the committee will however, be announced on Monday.

“The committee will evolve a consensus on the proposed amendments before making it part of the constitution,” POA president Lt Gen (r) Syed Arif Hassan told Dawn from Lahore on Saturday.

Arif, who chaired the annual general body meeting, said the committee will resolve all the pending issues of parallelism at the provincial level. It is pertinent to mention that at least six parallel bodies alone exist in Punjab.

Through another decision which took place by show of hands, the POA granted affiliation to Pakistan Rugby Union headed by Fauzi Khawaja. The affiliation and constitution committee of the POA had recommended grant of affiliation after the body fulfilled criteria laid down by the Olympic body. The PRU is also affiliated with the International and Asian bodies.

The meeting discussed Pakistan’s performance reports at the Beijing Olympics, Beach Games and Commonwealth Youth Games besides approving participation in certain international events in 2009.

Held at the Wapda Sports Complex, the AGM, among other matters, also approved minutes of the last meeting, accounts, budget etc. The Director General of the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) Amir Hamza Gilani also attended the meeting.
