LARKANA, Jan 21: A team of archeologists began work on digging a drain near the ‘First Street’ in the five-thousand-year-old ruins of Moenjodaro on Wednesday to drain out rainwater from the ruins, which were damaged by recent rains due to absence of a proper drainage system.

Abdul Fatah Shaikh, the curator, told Dawn on Wednesday that Qasim Ali Qasim, the project director of Moenjodaro, assistant curator Irshad Ali Ridd and Ali Haidar Gadhi of engineering wing of the Department of Archeology were engaged in the drain laying work.

The assignment would be completed within a month, said the curator. “It is a very fine job which needs delicate methodology so as to avoid damage to underlying structures and remains, if any, coming in the way of digging,” he said.

A few years ago, Mohan Lal, chief engineer of the department of archeology, had laid an open drain along the western side of DK area to stop onslaught of stagnant rainwater in the ruins but the recent rains damaged the drain.
