KARACHI, Jan 22: A 35-year-old man was shot dead and his friend wounded on Thursday by two unknown gunmen in Gulshan-i-Jamal.

The Sharea Faisal police said the victim, Rana Safdar, and his friends Tariq Lodhi and Mohammed Nadeem, had come from Rahimyar Khan and were staying at a guest house.

Tariq Lodhi, who was wounded in the attack, told the police that Rana Safdar went out of the guest house while talking on his cellular phone. He said that after a short while he heard gunshots and came out to find his friend lying on the ground.

He said the attackers, who were on a motorcycle, also opened fire on him as he came out and then they rode away.

The dead and the wounded were shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre. Sources at the hospital’s medico-legal section told Dawn that the victim received a fatal bullet wound in the chest.

They said the wounded man was shot a bullet in his arm.

The police registered a case against two unknown culprits under sections 302, 324 and 34 on the complaint of the victims’ friend, Mohammed Nadeem.

They said the deceased was the owner of a motorcycle showroom in Rahimyar Khan and the injured was a transporter.

The police said that it was not clear whether the man was killed during a bungled robbery.

Guard commits suicide

A 19-year-old private security guard committed suicide in Gizri.

The police said the victim, Khalid Mehmood, was posted at bungalow 66/3, of a businessman, Abbas Shaikh, at Khayaban-i-Badban in Defence Housing Authority, where he shot himself dead with his gun.

The body was taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for an autopsy.

Sources at the hospital’s medico-legal section told Dawn that the man shot himself in the chest.

The victim came from Vehari, Punjab.

The police quoted the victim’s brother, Ibrahim, as saying that the victim had not been sending money to his family in Punjab for the past few months.

The victim’s brother stated that his younger brother was very emotional and he might have killed himself as the family had been seeking money.

The police said the body was later handed to the victim’s brother after medico-legal formalities.

IB official killed

An official of the Intelligence Bureau was killed and five others were injured when the roof a mosque inside their office in Clifton collapsed.

The dead and the injured were shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, where the deceased was identified as Ghulam Mustafa, and the injured as Mohammed Ashraf, Mohammed Akbar, Mohammed Hussain, Mohammed Zaman and Mohammed Musa.

Killed in accident

A 34-year-old man was killed and three others, including two women, were injured in a traffic accident on the Super Highway.

The police said the deceased was identified as Mohammed Afzal and the injured as Shagufta, Shahida and Sohail.

They said the victims were travelling in a Hyderabad-bound bus which skidded off the road after one of its tyres burst.

The police said the victims were residents of Qasimabad, Hyderabad.

Bandits arrested

Two bandits, allegedly involved in more than 36 robberies, were arrested by the Gizri police late on Wednesday night.

Addressing a press conference at the Gizri police station, the capital city police chief, Wasim Ahmed, said the bandits mainly looted women in Defence.

The suspects, identified as Mohammed Ali and Umair, had been operating in the locality for the past eight months.

He said the bandits were arrested following a shootout and the police seized three vehicles, 60 wrist watches, 20 cellphones and a sizeable quantity of looted gold ornaments.

The city police chief said the suspects committed robberies in a rented white Corolla.

He said suspect Mohammed Ali had earlier been arrested by the Darakhshan police for impersonating as an army officer.
