DHAKA, Jan 25: The Bangladesh parliament, in its inaugural session on Sunday, unanimously adopted an obituary reference on the late PPP leader Benazir Bhutto, paying tribute to her as the ‘leader of toiling masses’ and respected politician of Pakistan.

A resolution, placed by Speaker Abdul Hamid and adopted by the parliament recalled how Benazir had been ‘illegally’ ousted from power time and again, despite having got people’s mandate in polls.

The resolution noted that she had suffered frequent imprisonment frequently and was also interned in her house as she ‘championed the cause of the people’.

The parliament noted that Benazir was illegally forced out of power in August of 1990.

She was again removed from power unconstitutionally in 1996 although her People’s Party had got an overwhelming mandate.

The resolution in Bengali commended the life and political career of Benazir.

The resolution was adopted unanimously after it was supported by lawmakers of the ruling Awami League, including Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party headed by Khaleda Zia and Jatiya Party of former president H. M. Ershad.

All the MPs, including Shaikh Hasina, Begum Khaleda and Gen (retd) Ershad, stood in silence for some time in memory of Benazir Bhutto.

The speaker said that the resolution would be sent to the members of the bereaved family through the foreign ministry.
