GUJRANWALA, Jan 30: Members of district council’s treasury benches led by the district nazim walked out during its session on Friday to protest Punjab government’s withholding of development funds and launching a media campaign against district nazims for their alleged corruption.

Earlier, the council adopted a resolution against the provincial government for withholding Rs230 million development funds.

However, opposition leader Taufiq Ahmad Butt and Wazirabad union council nazim Abdul Hafeez Khilji, who belonged to PML-N and PPP, respectively, criticised the treasury for staging a walkout and called it a drama.

They alleged that the district government was responsible for poor condition of all city roads and that the district nazim had failed to fulfill promises he had made with the people during his electioneering.

The treasury members chanted slogans against the Punjab government before joining the proceedings. However, the chair adjourned the house for indefinite period of time.

Later, the district nazim accused the provincial government of trying to abolish local governments system which, according to him, was very helpful in solving the problems of the masses at their doorstep. He said that audit paras could not be considered proof of corruption and the Punjab government launched a baseless media campaign against nazims.
