Asif appears before PCB committee

LAHORE, Feb 6: Dope-tainted fast bowler Mohammad Asif appeared before the three-member committee of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Friday probing his detention at Dubai airport in June, 2008 after the authorities recovered a banned substance from his wallet.

The committee headed by former Test wicket-keeper Wasim Bari, who is acting as PCB Director Human Resources with two other members Director Media Asif Sohail and Dr Sohail Saleem conducted the proceedings.

The committee will call Asif for the next meeting sometime next week.

It is learnt that Asif, who had been reportedly deported from Dubai after 19-day detention, claimed that he had obtained a new visa of Dubai, which shows his entry is not banned in the UAE’s state.

However, the committee has decided to confirm the validity of the visa, which Asif presented to them.

It is further learnt that in the last hearing held on Jan 29, Asif had claimed that he had a new visa of Dubai. But a copy of the visa he showed to the committee on Friday was issued on Feb 1, 2009.
