Clarke, Katich in altercation

Published February 7, 2009

MELBOURNE, Feb 6: Australia vice-captain Michael Clarke and batsman Simon Katich were involved in an altercation after the third Test against South Africa, reportedly over the timing of a song meant to foster team unity.

News Limited newspapers reported on Friday that Katich grabbed Clarke by the throat after the team’s victory in the Sydney Test ending on Jan 6. Team-mates pulled the pair apart from a clash over the singing of the team song, “Beneath The Southern Cross.” The newspapers said it was understood Clarke wanted the song finished early so he could leave to be with fiancee Lara Bingle. Both men acknowledged the altercation took place.

CA spokesman Peter Young said no action had been taken against the pair and it was considered a private matter.—AP
