HYDERABAD, Feb 9: A three-member delegation of the World Bank called on District Nazim Kanwar Naveed Jamil at his office here on Monday.

The delegates discussed the situation arising out of allage irregular and illegal appointments of teachers in the education department in the district. The delegation, comprising Luis Miglino, Benjamin Safran and Dhushyandh Raju, deplored “illegal appointments” of primary and high school teachers and wondered as to why no action was taken against those officials of education department responsible for the illegal appointments.

The district nazim said that a thorough inquiry should be conducted in the matter and appropriate action should be taken against those officials who had made these appointments after taking money.

He informed the World Bank delegation about the efforts being undertaken by the district government for the development and promotion of education.He said that the district government was spending 65 per cent of its budget on education. He said that it was only the Hyderabad district government throughout Pakistan, which had converted 210 government Urdu/Sindhi medium schools into English medium to enable the children of poor people to acquire best education. The number of these schools would be increased to 300 next year, he said.

He informed the World Bank delegation that the district government was looking after 1,080 schools and the best teachers were selected for special courses

He said free books, copies, geometry boxes and school bags had been provided to the students of English medium schools and added that the district education monitoring team had been entrusted with the responsibility of paying surprise visits to the schools to check attendance of teachers, students and other staff.

The World Bank team appreciated the efforts of the district government in the development and promotion of education and offered its support in this regard.
